Whenever Charlie pulled a shift in the greenhouse, he didn't so much mind it. He liked working with his hands, smelling the rich earth and joking around with the others. Working together with others who had survived the invasion or were on their side was a reminder of why this camp, this little town, was so important to maintain.
Today was a hot day, with the sun beating down through the thick glass and making the interior of the greenhouse a little muggy. All of those who had pulled greenhouse duty, including Charlie, were sweating as they plowed the northeast corner of the greenhouse for new planting. Charlie had pulled off his shirt and had left it near a pile of tools. The shift was almost at an end though, and most people were ready to leave the confines of the greenhouse.
"Do you remember ice cream?" Charlie asked with a smile, eliciting a groan from a few of his companions. "What I wouldn't give to hear an ice cream truck driving around outside right about now."

It hadn't taken Riley long to realize that the rebels had a system, a life... basically a way of living hidden away like they were. She found it quite nice to be able to have food to rely on, and to not be constantly looking over her shoulder for Seekers. What the brunette also found interesting and nice was that there was work to occupy her time with. Riley liked to stay busy and well, it also kept her mind at ease. Working seemed to help keep her sane....at least for the time being.
Riley wiped a hand across her brow, and pulled at the hem of her sweat laden tank top with a grimace. One of the first things she was going to to was visit the river! She looked at Charlie and groaned. He just had to bring up such a thing as ice cream, didn't he? "Now what you want to go and say stuff like that for Charlie?" Riley asked, "Now someone's gonna want to raid and hit up the ice cream truck or store."

Charlie laughed at Riley's response to his question. "Aw, come one, Riley," he said, throwing up his hands in mock hurt at her killing such a dream. "It might not be that bad of an idea. That payout might be worth the risk of doing it - I'd certainly want to be there for the spoils." What spoils that would be! Of course, it made Charlie almost regret joking around about getting some ice cream, because it really would be amazing to get his hands on some. Living where the humans had to meant there wasn't really such conveniences as electricity, and thus refrigerators or freezers. But if there were...
Well, the only was that was going to happen in any sort of fashion was if he happened to be on the next raiding mission and pick up a carton of ice cream for the party to share. He'd been out before, but certainly wasn't a regular. He was a hard worker and did his best, but some of the others in the camp had skills better suited to raiding than he did. It had been a little while since his last trip, so maybe he'd try to squeeze himself into the next mission. It might be a good change of pace anyway.
Charlie ran his fingers through sweat-soaked hair and grinned. "We can always just pull some electricity from our neighbors across the mountains and make our own ice cream. You don't think they'd mind too much, do you?"

Riley scoffed. "Seriously Charlie? Electricity? That's just like, begging to get caught." But the appeal of ice cream was starting to sound ever so delicious. "How about we just sneak into that Soul town and hunt us up a good old fashioned hand crank ice cream maker and everything needed to make homemade ice cream...: She rolled her eyes and rubbed her stomach. "You've done it now Charlie-man....I'm craving me some ice cream."

Charlie just shrugged at her comment on electricity. "Maybe if we ask nice," he joked, knowing something like that was entirely impossible. Electricity was just a well-remembered dream for them out here, where the alternatives now were what they'd likely used hundreds of years ago. He could still remember the wonderful feeling opening a refrigerator and letting the cool air wash over him, without having the added fear of getting out of that house as soon as possible to avoid detection.
As Riley went on, Charlie laughed, having convinced a fellow ice-cream lover to his cause. "I guess there's just no cure for it then," he said, shaking his hand. "We don't be satisfied until ice cream, and you are far too logical with that homemade ice cream thing, Riles." The nickname came easily to him, though he'd never called her anything like that before. "But I guess it's our best hope. Are you thinking field trip?"
Charlie was actually half serious now, curious if she'd actually be up for something like that. He hadn't done anything so stupid in a long time, much as he joked about it. But maybe it was about time to do something stupid and human, something entirely selfish with harmless rewards if they made it out unscathed. Their shift in the garden was nearly over, and what better way to spend some free time on the rest of this hot day?

"Ask nicely..." Riley rolled her eyes and scoffed. That was one thing that gave her the willies... all the nicety-nice Souls. Really creeped her out, and she cringed just from thinking about it.
"Oh yeah." She nodded, "Definitely thinking field trip. Definitely." Riley almost felt somewhat like her old self at the moment, and that made her smile, a real smile, complete with an almost wicked gleam in her eye. She could already taste the ice cream. "I'm game if you are, Charlie." The only problem she could foresee was Will, and well... they could just cross that bridge when they had to.
